Addiction
Addiction is the dependence on an activity or substance such as drugs or alcohol, or actions such as sex, work, the internet, pornography, etc. Addictions can be pleasurable at first, but over time the addiction interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, and health.
Codependence
Codependency is defined as excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a “partner” who typically requires support due to an illness or addiction. Often these “partners” are the parents, or a spouse, but they can also be grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, or good friends.
Treatment
The first step for the addicted person is to acknowledge that there is a dependency problem (addiction problem). Only then can they get help. Treatment options for addiction depend on several factors, including what type of substance it is and how deeply it has affected the patient. Typically, treatment includes a combination of approaches.
